WWF-Australia's Leonie Sii Marks First Field Trip With Green Sea Turtle Conservation in Bowen

Leonie Sii, WWF-Australia's Content Producer, recently embarked on her first field trip since joining the organisation four months ago. The trip took her to Bowen, Queensland, where she worked with local experts and indigenous rangers to study and protect green sea turtles.

Sii's trip was filled with learning and discovery. She learned to identify male and female green sea turtles from experts, a skill that will be invaluable in her future work. The trip also left its mark on her physically, with Sii returning to Sydney with interesting tan lines.

Sii and the team had a significant encounter during their time in Bowen. They caught and measured a 140kg female green sea turtle, one of the largest ever caught by the Gudjuda Rangers. The team then tagged the turtle before releasing it back into the water. This process is crucial for population analysis and monitoring the health of marine ecosystems. Sii shared two of her favorite photos from the trip, showcasing the unique eyes of these remarkable creatures.

WWF-Australia works closely with the Gudjuda Rangers, who protect their Land and Sea Country. For the indigenous community, turtles hold historical and cultural significance. The collaboration between WWF-Australia and the Gudjuda Rangers is a testament to the power of community involvement in conservation efforts.

Leonie Sii's first field trip with WWF-Australia was a successful and enlightening experience. She returns with new skills and a deeper understanding of the work involved in protecting and studying green sea turtles. With the footage she captured, Sii plans to create engaging content that will raise awareness about these magnificent creatures and the importance of their conservation.
