Woolsey Fire Devastates Malibu Equestrian Community, but Hope Remains
The Woolsey Fire in California has left the equestrian community in Malibu reeling, with homes, barns, and hundreds of horses destroyed or displaced. Laura Kotimäki-Hurd, owner and trainer at LKH Equestrian, lost her home ranch in the blaze. Despite the devastation, the community remains optimistic about recovery.
Laura's husband bravely rescued four horses from their property during the evacuation. The couple has been tirelessly searching for their missing horse, Archie, hiking seven miles daily to check on their rescued horses and search for him. Five days after the fire, Archie was found safe on a mountaintop by the SPCA of Los Angeles. The fight to help those affected by the wildfires continues even after the fires are out.
Comedian Whitney Cummings and actress Beth Behrs have been involved in supporting fire victims and raising awareness. Donations can be made to the USEF Disaster Relief Fund and Animal Hope and Wellness to help affected equestrians.
The equestrian community in Malibu faces a long road to recovery, but with the support of organizations and generous donors, they are determined to bounce back. Laura remains optimistic about their ability to rebuild and continue their passion for horse riding.
