Winners Announced for Ocean Art Underwater Photography Competition
In the realm of underwater photography, the Ocean Art 'Safe Under the Sea' competition stands out for its unique mission. This year's event, slated to open for entries in September 2020, is not just a showcase of stunning marine life and captivating seascapes, but also a significant contribution to the global fight against Covid-19.
The competition, which attracted entries from 79 countries, was generously sponsored by Bluewater Photo and Travel, Ikelite, Paralenz, AquaMarine Diving Bali, the Watergarden Hotel, Sealife, Atlantis Dive Resorts, and others.
The winners of various categories were recently announced. Yannick Bruynoghe clinched the top spot in the Underwater Conservation category with his breathtaking image, "Welcome to Tubbataha", shot in the Tubbataha Reef, Philippines. In the Wide Angle category, Barraque Nicolas took 2nd place with "Panoramic of the Rubis", a stunning shot from the South of France.
Taner Atilgan's "Famous Motorcycle of Thistlegorm", captured in the Red Sea, Egypt, won 1st Place in the Shipwrecks category. Joanna Smart's "Curiosity", a mesmerising photo from Anacapa Island, California, USA, earned her the 1st Place in the Ocean Art 'Safe Under the Sea' competition.
The Best of Show title was won by Edwar Herreno for his image, "Releasing Hope". Interestingly, "Releasing Hope" was also the winning image, shot in Galapagos Island, Equador.
In the Marine Life Behavior category, Gaetano Gargulo placed 2nd with "In the Net", a captivating shot from Praiano, Italy. Rodger Klein won 1st Place in the Compact Wide Angle category with his photo, "Bubblewand", shot in Venice Beach, California, USA.
Eric Hou's "Red" and "Blanket" images, both shot in Anilao, Batangas, Philippines, earned him 1st Place in the Blackwater category and 3rd Place in the Underwater Art category, respectively.
The competition donated 25% of its proceeds to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the CDC Foundation, in their ongoing efforts to combat Covid-19. Mark Kirkland placed 3rd in the competition with his photo, "Click photo to view full size", shot in Cape Wrath, Scotland. Tobias Friedrich and Celia Kujala both placed 2nd in the competition with their respective photos, "Descending from Above" (shot in Tasiilaq, East-Greenland) and "Arms Everywhere" (shot in Hornby Island, Canada).
