Tourism in Lower Saxony's Vacation Regions sees Robust Bookings for Upcoming Holidays

Despite the potential for rain during the late May period, demand for holidays in Lower Saxony remains strong. A survey by the German Press Agency reveals that vacation destinations along the North Sea coast and the Harz region are in high demand, even with the delayed Easter holidays.

The beach resorts and islands of the North Sea coast, particularly East Frisia, are among the busiest travel destinations during the Ascension and Pentecost long weekends. According to Wiebke Leverenz, spokesperson for the East Frisia Tourism GmbH in Leer, demand is similar to that of 2024, with accommodations in vacation spots ranging from 70 to 90% occupied.

The Ostfriesische Islands are expected to be fully booked, with the ferry company Reederei Norden-Frisia planning additional ferry departures to Juist and Norderney. The increased demand implies that ferries are likely to be filled on Sunday return journeys, and some ferries from Norderney to Norddeich are already fully booked.

The Lower Saxon low mountain range, or Harz, also experiences high demand during the Pentecost holidays. According to a spokesperson for the tourism association, many accommodations are already fully or near-fully booked, particularly for the Ascension long weekend. The region is also popular for hiking vacations, with positive signals from campsites. The Harz hosts anticipate higher visitor numbers than in 2024 if the weather remains favorable.

The Lüneburg Heath is another popular vacation destination, with Ascension almost fully booked, and Pentecost still having some available spots. The region is a favorite among hikers, with many visiting for the holidays.

Overall, the busiest travel days for holidays around Ascension and Pentecost are the long weekends and peak holiday periods. Prospective travelers are advised to book accommodations and plan activities well in advance to secure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

  1. The busier vacation training programs could potentially cater to the increasing demand in the tourism industry of Lower Saxony, enabling local youth to secure jobs in the hospitality sector during the holiday seasons, such as Ascension and Pentecost, on the North Sea coast, particularly East Frisia.
  2. To accommodate the increasing number of travelers during the upcoming holiday seasons, it would be beneficial for community policies to consider expanding the vocational training programs to develop a skilled workforce, thereby improving the lifestyle for both residents and visitors in Lower Saxony's vacation regions.
