US Shutdown Threatens Aviation Safety as FAA Furloughs 11,000
The ongoing US government shutdown, which began on October 1, 2025, is causing significant disruptions in the aviation industry. More than 11,000 FAA employees have been furloughed, and thousands more continue to work without pay, raising concerns about safety and operational efficiency.
The shutdown has led to the suspension of long-term projects such as infrastructure improvements and mediated contract negotiations. Training for aviation technicians has also been halted, further impacting the industry's future workforce. The FAA has furloughed 11,322 of its 44,829 employees, with about 33,000 remaining on the job but most going unpaid until the shutdown ends.
Air traffic controllers, passenger screening staff, and other critical personnel are facing unpaid shifts during the shutdown. The National Air Traffic Controllers Association estimates that more than 2,000 of its represented members are furloughed. This has raised concerns about safety, as certification work, new rulemaking, and many safety initiatives are on hold. Airlines for America has urged lawmakers to act quickly to resolve the shutdown, warning that furloughs and unpaid shifts could slow the aviation system.
The shutdown is putting safety at risk in the aviation industry, with critical personnel working without pay and vital projects on hold. The FAA has furloughed more than 11,000 employees, and the situation is expected to worsen until the government reopens. Lawmakers are urged to resolve the shutdown promptly to mitigate potential disruptions and ensure the safety of air travel.
