American Express Travel Portal: A Comprehensive Guide for Cardholders

American Express offers a travel portal that caters to all its cardholders, providing a convenient platform to book flights, hotels, and more. Here's a breakdown of what you can expect when using this service.

More than 20 airlines participate in the International Airline Program (IAP), allowing you to book travel for up to eight passengers. To access the travel portal, simply visit americanexpress.com/en-us/travel/. After logging in, you can select your preferred travel options, enter travel dates and cities, choose options, and pay with your American Express credit card, points, or a combination. It's important to note that a $39 nonrefundable ticketing fee applies.

When booking flights through IAP with The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, you'll earn 5x Membership Rewards points. As for hotels, cardholders have exclusive access to the Fine Hotels & Resorts collection, offering over 2,000 properties worldwide. When making reservations for one night or more, members receive benefits such as a $600 statement credit, room upgrade, daily breakfast, guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout, complimentary in-room WiFi, and a unique property benefit valued at least $100.

American Express has also introduced Trip Cancel Guard, available for purchase when making a booking through its travel portal. This service offers up to a 75% reimbursement of travel costs if canceled two days before the trip. Moreover, AmEx launched its own version of CFAR coverage for airfare booked through the travel portal using an AmEx card in May 2022.

However, it's worth noting that the cancellation policy for bookings made through the American Express travel portal is determined by the airline. Additionally, some cardholders might find downsides to booking via the portal, such as a low value for points, complicated customer service, and no hotel elite status benefits or loyalty credits.

The American Express credit cards that automatically grant access to the AmEx travel portal include premium cards like the Amex Platinum Card and the Amex Gold Card. These cards offer benefits such as online travel credits, extensive travel insurance, and bonus reward points usable through the AmEx travel service.

Lastly, it's worth mentioning that the best travel credit cards of 2025, according to various reviews, include the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Wells Fargo Autograph® Card, Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve®, The Platinum Card® from American Express, Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card, and others. While American Express cards are a strong contender, it's always wise to compare and choose the card that best suits your travel needs.
