Unveiling of the Destination Tracker: Boosting Traveler Assurance

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have collaborated to create the UNWTO-IATA Destination Tracker, a free online tool designed to provide up-to-date information on COVID-19 travel requirements and safety measures for destinations worldwide.

The tool, which is now available through the websites of both organizations, aims to support travelers in making informed and confident decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic. By offering a centralized, reliable source of real-time data, the Destination Tracker seeks to reduce uncertainty and enable travelers to better plan their trips according to current health and safety guidelines.

The Destination Tracker provides information on three key areas: Covid-19 Indicators, Air Travel Regulations, and Destination Measures. Covid-19 Indicators include infection rates, positivity rates, and vaccination rollout by destination/country. Air Travel Regulations are provided by IATA's Timatic solution and include test and quarantine requirements. Destination Measures will be provided by national tourism organizations and will include general health and safety requirements, transit through a country, curfew, and regulations related to restaurants and attractions.

The Destination Tracker is particularly important during the pandemic, as regulations and conditions can change rapidly, influencing travel feasibility and safety. By aggregating and regularly updating this information, the Destination Tracker helps travelers navigate the complex and dynamic landscape of travel regulations caused by COVID-19.

The Memorandum of Understanding between the UNWTO and IATA, which was further strengthened by a Memorandum of Understanding signed in October 2020, aims to restore confidence in international air travel, foster innovation, promote greater public-private collaboration, and advance sustainability and resilience in the tourism sector.

As one in three destinations remains closed to tourists and restrictions and in-country measures are continuously being revised, the Destination Tracker aims to provide clarity on COVID-19 measures affecting tourism. Travelers and travel companies can use the Destination Tracker for informed decision-making when borders reopen and travel resumes. The Destination Tracker is a valuable resource for those seeking accurate, timely, and comprehensive travel information to minimize risks and disruptions associated with COVID-19 travel restrictions.
