This approximately 5-kilometer hike takes participants through the picturesque landscapes of the Thuringian Forest, the Grabfeld, and the Wasserkuppe, while also offering glimpses into the harsh reality of a divided Germany. The route follows the former inner-German border, providing a tangible connection to the past.
The hike is guided by eyewitness Jens Graf, offering an authentic and moving account of life in Birx during the division era. Along the way, participants will discover remnants of the border fortifications, such as dilapidated barbed wire installations, and learn about the 'little border traffic' that functioned, or didn't, during this time.
