United Kingdom Increases Significant Entry Charge (ETA)

The United Kingdom is set to introduce a new security measure for visa-free travel, the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), starting from April 2, 2025. This requirement is similar to the US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which was introduced in 2009.

The ETA application process is straightforward and can be completed online or via an app, recommended by the UK government. For persons aged nine and above, a current portrait photo is required during the application. Along with the photo, applicants will need to provide their address and occupation details, as well as answer security questions.

The fee for the ETA will increase by 60% to 16 pounds (approximately 21 euros) starting April 9, 2025. As a result, the cost of entering the UK for a family of four will increase from 52 to 84 euros.

It's important to note that without authorization, check-in is usually not possible. This requirement also applies to flight bookings with layovers made via online platforms. Travel agencies and booking platforms are required to inform their customers about the ETA requirement.

The authority responsible for issuing the ETA in the UK is UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), which is part of the Home Office. The ETA is linked directly to the passport and can be viewed digitally at border control.

The ETA application process has been available since March 5, 2023. This new requirement applies to German visitors, as well as those from other countries, as more and more nations are adopting advance registration as a security measure for visa-free travel. It's recommended to apply for the ETA at least three days before travel to avoid delays.

This new requirement for UK entry was announced recently, marking a shift towards enhanced security measures for travellers. The ETA is designed to strengthen border control and ensure a safer travel experience for all.
