Unique pier in the English coastal town receives £5.5million renovation, securing its historic status
The historic Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare is set to undergo restoration, following the announcement of a £5.5million funding promise from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
This funding will fill the gap left by the RNLI, who had previously pulled out of the deal due to viability concerns earlier in the year. The RNLI had originally planned to establish a new base on the pier and had raised £5million towards the cost.
Mark Canniford, council cabinet member responsible for the project, made the announcement. The Grand Pier, a separate entity from Birnbeck Pier, has not faced any such viability concerns.
Birnbeck Pier, which has been closed to the public since 1994, is the only pier in the UK that links the mainland to an island. It is a significant piece of Weston-super-Mare's history, while the Grand Pier, which officially opened to the public on June 11, 1904, had an extension the following year.
Visitors to the Grand Pier can explore the pier for £2, while locals can enter for free all year round. The pier offers various rides and attractions, including the House of Horrors, Freefall, and Go Karts.
Throughout the year, the Grand Pier hosts events like Sunset Sessions, Moonlight Beach Walk, Halloween Family Party, and firework displays. However, these events are separate from the Birnbeck Pier restoration project.
It was predicted that councillors would vote to cancel the Birnbeck Pier restoration project before the surprise funding was announced. The National Lottery Heritage Fund provided a grant for the restoration project of Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare, which was awarded in 2021.
The historic pier restoration project in Weston-super-Mare will continue, ensuring the preservation of a significant part of the town's history. The Grand Pier, on the other hand, continues to thrive as a popular attraction for both locals and tourists alike.
