U.S. H-1B Visa Fee Surge Prices Out Applicants; U.K. Faces Criticism for Complex Visa System

The U.S. has recently increased the fee for H-1B visas to $100,000, making it unaffordable for many. Meanwhile, the U.K. faces criticism for its complex and costly visa system, which is reportedly under review. Organizations and advocacy groups are calling for changes to facilitate work for international researchers.

The U.S.'s new fee structure for H-1B visas, which are commonly used by skilled workers, has priced out many applicants. This move has raised concerns about the impact on businesses and the economy.

In the U.K., the visa system has been criticized for its ambiguity and intimidating language, making it difficult for researchers to navigate. High visa costs are already a barrier, according to the Campaign for Science and Engineering (CaSE). Some organizations are pushing for changes, including potentially removing fees for the global talent visa. However, it's unclear which organizations are behind this push.

The complexity of visa policies and lack of clear communication strain organizations like the Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL), which spends over $21,000 annually on legal fees for visa support and employs a full-time HR staff to manage the process. CaSE has warned that removing indefinite leave to remain for settled individuals could damage research and development.

The U.K. government has been urged to remove barriers in its visa process for researchers. Alicia Greated, executive director of CaSE, has called on the government to take action to improve the visa system for skilled workers and employers. Changes to visa fees and policies could significantly impact the U.K.'s ability to attract and retain global talent.
