JetBlue and United Airlines Announce Strategic Partnership: Blue Sky Alliance

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has given its approval for the Blue Sky alliance between JetBlue and United Airlines, a collaboration set to launch in phases starting fall 2025 [1][2][4]. This partnership aims to link the loyalty programs, booking platforms, and operational resources of both airlines, providing enhanced flexibility, benefits, and network reach for travelers.

Key benefits of the Blue Sky alliance include reciprocal frequent flyer benefits, booking and scheduling integration, expanded service offerings, and airport slot exchange.

Reciprocal Frequent Flyer Benefits

United’s MileagePlus members can now earn and redeem miles on most JetBlue flights, and JetBlue’s TrueBlue members can do the same on United flights. Loyalty benefits such as priority boarding, free checked bags, preferred seating, and same-day flight changes will apply across both airlines [1][2][3].

Booking and Scheduling Integration

Customers will be able to book flights from both airlines on either carrier’s website and mobile app via an interline agreement, facilitating seamless multi-trip itineraries [1][2].

Expanded Service Offerings

United will integrate JetBlue’s Paisly platform to sell hotels, car rentals, cruises, and travel insurance on United’s platforms [1].

Airport Slot Exchange

Starting in 2027, United will gain up to seven of JetBlue’s daily slots at JFK Airport Terminal 6, while both airlines will exchange flight schedules at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). United will provide JetBlue with eight slots at Newark, and both airlines will utilize their respective slots to optimize operations and connectivity [1][2].

Phased Launch

The alliance will be rolled out progressively beginning in fall 2025, with full reciprocal loyalty benefits and booking integrations expected to be implemented later this year and into 2026 [1][3].

The Blue Sky alliance is designed to offer customers more options for finding flights and will complement the networks of both airlines. This strategic partnership will create a more connected travel experience for passengers, making it easier to book flights, earn miles, and enjoy a wider network.
