Turkish Airlines solidifies connection to Spain with the debut of their Seville route
Turkish Airlines Expands Presence in Spain and Latin America
Turkish Airlines has launched a new daily nonstop service between Istanbul (IST) and Seville (SVQ), Spain, marking a significant expansion in the Spanish market. This move is part of the airline's strategic plan to establish Spain as a springboard for the Latin American market.
The launch event was attended by the Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, and featured a photo exhibition and cultural activities showcasing destinations across Turkey. Ahmet Bolat, Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee member of Turkish Airlines, reiterated the airline's commitment to continued growth in Spain and Latin America.
Turkish Airlines already flies to several destinations in Latin America, including Buenos Aires (EZE), Sao Paulo (GRU), Santiago de Chile (SCL), and Bogota (BOG). The expansion in Spain and Latin America is not limited to Seville, as the airline's group airlines (which also includes AJet and SunExpress) are expected to potentially carry some 400,000 annual passengers between Spain and Turkey within a few years.
The launch of the Seville route stems from a detailed assessment of the Spanish market potential, where Turkish Airlines already serves five other cities. Turkish Airlines sees potential for increased tourist traffic between Spain and Turkey, two countries that are already among the world's most visited.
In addition to Spain, Turkish Airlines is also expanding into Africa, with the launch of a service to Port Sudan (PZU) on September 17, 2025. Port Sudan, the second largest city in the eponymous African country and its main outlet to the Red Sea, marks another step in Turkish Airlines' African expansion.
Turkish Airlines aims to draw more traffic from Latin America and expand further into the region by leveraging Air Europa's well-established presence there. Turkish Airlines and Air Europa are working to cooperate in areas such as loyalty programs, but no additional details were provided.
Bolat highlighted the potential for tourism traffic growth between Spain and Turkey, as well as closer business ties between the two countries. Turkish Airlines' marketing materials emphasize Turkey's rich historical and natural heritage as a tourist destination. A prime example is Göbekli Tepe, a 12,000-year-old site in southeastern Turkey, which is featured prominently in Turkish Airlines' marketing materials as a way to diversify tourist flows beyond Istanbul.
The governments of Spain and Turkey have recently aligned on several matters, including defense cooperation programs and their stance on the Gaza conflict. This political alignment could further strengthen the economic ties between the two countries.
In conclusion, Turkish Airlines' expansion into Spain and Latin America, as well as its foray into Africa, signifies a significant growth strategy for the airline. With its rich history, cultural offerings, and strategic location, Turkey presents a compelling destination for tourists from Spain and beyond.
