TSA Introduces Family-Dedicated Lanes to Alleviate Summer Vacation Travel Anxiety

The US Department of Homeland Security has announced a new initiative, the "Families on the Fly" campaign, designed to make it easier for families to navigate security screening when traveling together.

The campaign provides dedicated family lanes at select airports to make TSA security screening faster and less stressful for families traveling with children. Families with small children can access these special lanes, which help expedite the screening process while maintaining security standards.

In addition, families can soon benefit from discounted TSA PreCheck® fees, allowing them to enroll in the expedited screening program at a lower cost. Children 12 and under may accompany service members and DOD staff in TSA PreCheck lanes without restrictions, while minors 13-17 must be on the same airline reservation with a TSA PreCheck-eligible parent or guardian to receive expedited screening.

Current and planned participating airports include Orlando International (MCO), Charlotte-Douglas International (CLT), John Wayne Orange County Airport (SNA), Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), Jacksonville International (JAX), Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport (PVD), Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), and others, with additional airports slated for inclusion nationwide.

When traveling, it's essential to comply with TSA rules. Liquids like baby food, formula, and breast milk are allowed in your carry-on, but should be declared to TSA at the beginning of the screening process. Older children's luggage must also comply with TSA rules, including the 3-1-1 liquids rule. Toys that resemble weapons, such as Nerf guns and toy swords, should be avoided when bringing toys in your carry-on.

Arriving at the airport early and leaving time for unexpected delays can help reduce stress and make the travel experience more enjoyable. It's also recommended to have a conversation with your kids about the security process before arriving at the airport.

This initiative aims to enhance hospitality and convenience for families traveling together through TSA security checkpoints. The end of the shoes-off policy is predicted to shorten wait times and make security screening more efficient. The "Families on the Fly" campaign is a welcome step towards making air travel less daunting for families.
