The People's Bank of China (PBOC) has updated its e-CNY app, designed for the state-backed digital renminbi, to make it easier for international tourists to use during their visits to China. The latest update, version 1.1.1, now allows tourists to top up their e-CNY wallets using Mastercard or VISA cards. This move comes as China hosts the Asian Games and continues to experiment with e-CNY for payments during events like the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022. The e-CNY app, available to iPhone users in some regions of China and China-based Google Play Store users, enables consumers to create personal digital wallets for the state-backed digital renminbi, e-CNY. It is currently in beta and being tested for everyday transactions among the Chinese population. However, no specific information about the availability of the e-CNY app for users outside China is provided. Similarly, no information about the ability to top up e-CNY wallets with Mastercard or VISA cards for users outside China is available at this time. The goal is to make e-CNY a commonly used payment method within China for physical retail stores and online purchases. The use of e-CNY by tourists in China is part of an effort to streamline everyday transactions, providing a more convenient and efficient payment solution for visitors. The updated Digital Yuan app is being led and managed by the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central institution responsible for the digital yuan project. For more information, users are encouraged to download the e-CNY app from the China-based Google Play Store or the App Store, depending on their device.
