Thrilling Expeditions in the Caribbean: Canyoneering in Dominica

Feeling the adrenaline rush thirty feet below in a crystal-clear canyon, I plunged into Dominica's invigorating waters after Berani's countdown. This isn't your typical Caribbean vacation - instead, it's an adventure-seeker's paradise!

'No lounging on beaches or sipping cocktails here, nope. Put on your boots and dive into some pools!' Marvin, our hiking guide yesterday, wasn't kidding.

Screaming like a sailor, I jumped off the moss-covered canyon edge, crashing into the perfectly refreshing - dare I say, cold - water below. This island nation was turning out to be quite a thrill ride!

If you want to avoid the three-letter "C" word, Dominicans prefer their waters to be called "refreshing" instead of "cold." And I think the most refreshing part of the day is the adrenaline rush of throwing yourself headfirst into these waters.

Dominica captured my heart in an instant, swiftly becoming one of my favorite islands to visit. This is the perfect island for those who crave adventure and want to experience more than just sandy beaches and beach bars. While I enjoyed my relaxation time in both Antigua and Aruba, Dominica felt like a whole other world... and canyoning was just the beginning!

This Caribbean gem is brimming with some of Mother Nature's most impressive works. The breathtaking canyons and water pools are just a few examples of Dominica's geological wonders.

Truth be told, I was a bit apprehensive about canyoning for the first time - or really, anywhere for that matter. But Extreme Dominica took excellent care of me, ensuring I stayed safe every step of the way.

Canyoning isn't limited to Dominica, either. You can also find canyoning spots in the Dominican Republic and neighboring islands. But given Dominica's affectionate nickname as the nature island, you can bet you'll have an unforgettable experience here.

Berani and Benny led our canyon and rappel tours, catering to a wide variety of age groups. From kids as young as seven to seasoned adventurers in their eighties, countless people have thrown, jumped, and bathed in these invigorating Canyons, some of which even appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean.

In 2017, Hurricane Maria wreaked havoc on Dominica, leaving destruction in its wake. Maria cleared the canopy covering the gorge, allowing sunlight through, which is why the rocky walls are now a moss-covered green. The setting couldn't have been more perfect for my inaugural canyoning experience.

Our half-day tour started with gearing up and essential training before heading to the starting point near Ti Tou Gorge. For those who aren't quite ready for intense canyoning, you can take a dip in the refreshing waters of Ti Tou Gorge without require equipment, except maybe a life jacket, for a relaxing swim through the gorge to a small waterfall.

For those seeking a more advanced canyoning experience, Dominica offers full-day options and huge waterfall rappels to satisfy your thirst for excitement.

By the time the final zip-line was set up, I didn't want this fantastic day to end. It certainly was an exhilarating and beautiful experience that I won't soon forget.

I visited Dominica during the off-season, so the island was particularly quiet. If you're visiting Dominica on a cruise ship, though, canyoning is one of the most exciting activities you can do on the island, and you can even be picked up straight from the port.

Should you choose to embark on a canyoning adventure in the Caribbean, Dominica promises an unforgettable experience filled with adrenaline, breathtaking landscapes, and memories you'll cherish for a lifetime. And hey, maybe you'll be lucky enough to spot a sperm whale while you're at it!

If you're an adventure junkie who appreciates nature's raw beauty, Dominica is calling your name. Embrace the wild side and prepare yourself for an adrenaline-filled journey through this mesmerizing Caribbean island.
