Thousands gather as a new Disney cruise vessel, capable of accommodating 4,000 passengers, departs from the shipyard.
The Disney Destiny, a 144,256 gross ton vessel and the third addition to Disney's Wish-class series, is nearing completion at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. This technologically advanced and environmentally friendly cruise ship is set to join Disney Cruise Line's expanding fleet.
Construction of the Disney Destiny began with the laser-hybrid welding of 100 large steel blocks, a method that improves efficiency and reduces material waste. Each block is made up of 8 to 12 sections, most of which are constructed upside down for easier installation of systems before being assembled. The shipyard's large cranes, notably the "golden eagle," lift blocks weighing up to 800 metric tons into place.
The Disney Destiny, with an approximate 4,000 passenger capacity, is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). This fuel type produces fewer emissions compared to traditional marine fuels, reflecting Disney's commitment to reducing emissions in its fleet. The ship is scheduled to set sail towards the North Sea in late summer, with a maiden voyage planned for November 20, 2025, from Florida.
The Meyer Werft shipyard, renowned for building cruise ships, received a rescue package from the federal and state governments, securing around 80 percent of shares for 400 million euros. The shipyard also received guarantees of around one billion euros each from the federal and state governments to secure bank loans. Despite financial difficulties, the shipyard has an order book until 2031, including projects for converter platforms for offshore wind turbines and a research ship.
The Disney Destiny, part of the Wish class, is not the only ship built for the Disney Corporation by shipbuilding experts in Emden. The Disney Wish and Disney Treasure preceded it. The shipyard also secured four additional orders from the Disney Corporation, scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2031.
As the Disney Destiny makes its way towards the sea, it stands as a testament to the shipyard's resilience and Disney's commitment to environmental sustainability. The ship's construction and features underscore its position as a technologically advanced and environmentally considerate addition to Disney Cruise Line's fleet.
