Stunning snaps from Portugal's everlasting spring island - an album showcasing 40 captivating images of Madeira.

Stepping foot on the volcanic paradise of Madeira for the first time, I was blown away by the hidden delights this Atlantic gem held. Four years late to the game, I quickly realized I'd been missing out on one of Europe's most stunning destinations.

Madeira encompasses an archipelago of the main island, sun-soaked Porto Santo, and a handful of uninhabited nature reserves. An autonomous region of sunny Portugal, Madeira's location puts it at the same latitude as Casablanca, with its diverse topography creating four micro-climates that transform the island into a breathtaking haven.

From the sun-drenched south, filled with banana plantations and cliffside cities that climb mountains, to the rugged north with its waterfalls cascading down lush green cliffs toward natural swimming pools below, Madeira's diverse landscape is a photographer's dream. The island's interior is home to dramatic mountain peaks that weave through the clouds, while a network of walking trails follows irrigation canals.

Originally, I had a few 'must-visit' spots on my Madeira list, including the misty Fanal forest, the cloud-filled Pico do Arieiro to Ruivo route, and a boat trip to spot dolphins and whales. Despite saving these experiences for the final days of my trip, wet weather forced cancellations. However, amidst the initial disappointment, I soon discovered countless other enchanting spots throughout Madeira that solidified my plans for a return visit.

One of the highest sea-cliffs in the world, Cabo Girao, offers jaw-dropping views from the coastal community of Câmara De Lobos, but the experience is even more breathtaking from the glass-bottomed platform at the top. Curral de Ferias, also known as 'Valley of the Nuns,' tells the story of a group of nuns who hid from pirates in the 16th century, leading the valley to be named after their sanctuary. Hike down into the picturesque valley and treat yourself to traditional Madeira soups, liquors, and mountain swimming holes.

Camara do Lobos, an old fishing village-turned-municipality, retains an authentic atmosphere with fishermen playing cards by the wooden boats and cozy cafes lining the streets. Known for being Winston Churchill's muse, the village's charming architecture can still be seen today, along with inventive street art created from repurposed drink cans.

Staying at the Quinta da Saraiva B&B offers breathtaking views over Camara do Lobos and a friendly, family-run atmosphere. Book direct for the best rates and enjoy a special discount with the code DANFLYINGSOLO. May I suggest saving a bit of your budget for a visit to Santana, where traditional thatched houses are a tourist attraction and the sunrise views from the top of the cable car are unforgettable.

The Levada do Caldeirão Verde trail is one of the most beautiful walks on the island, passing waterfalls and greenery along the way before ending at a shaded picnic area. In the north, Sao Vicente provides striking ocean views and the chance to explore underground volcanic caves. The small community of Seixal boasts one of the most dramatic black-sand beaches on the island, as well as several swimming pools set into the Atlantic Ocean.

Porto Moniz, home to tranquil ocean swimming pools carved into rocks, offers unique photoshoot opportunities, even during stormy weather. Further south, Ponta da Sol offers a pleasant day spent swimming, enjoying local rum cocktails, and marveling at its Italian-like atmosphere.

Finally, don't miss out on visiting Funchal, Madeira's colorful capital city that's jam-packed with history, markets, and forts. If you're up for it, grab a drink at the Original Poncha Bar before exploring the rest of the island. For those seeking a beach holiday or a trip to Porto Santo, the golden-sand island can easily be reached by ferry from Madeira.
