Strategic collaboration in surgical services: Schön Klinik Neustadt teams up with UKSH for future endeavors in surgery

The University Visceral Surgical Center Schleswig-Holstein East (UVZ East) has been launched as a result of a partnership between Schön Klinik Neustadt and the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH). This collaboration aims to enhance the quality and scope of visceral surgery care in the region.

Schön Klinik Neustadt, a focus hospital for the Ostholstein region, offers 560 acute and rehabilitation beds and employs over 1,100 staff members. It has been an academic teaching hospital of the University of Lübeck since 2003 and specializes in orthopedics, trauma surgery, neurology, and internal medicine, treating around 50,000 outpatients and inpatients annually. The clinic has long-standing experience in regional care and high-quality specialized services in colorectal surgery.

On the other hand, UKSH, the only maximum care hospital in Schleswig-Holstein and one of the largest university hospitals in Europe, with around 17,000 employees at the locations in Kiel and Lübeck, contributes its university medical high-performance medicine and specialization in complex operations. It treats over 500,000 patients annually and is a pioneer in digitalization, research, and modern patient care. The Clinic for Surgery at the Lübeck campus of UKSH is recognized as a certified center of excellence for minimally invasive surgery and pancreatic surgery (DGAV) and offers the full range of gentle surgical procedures, including robot-assisted techniques.

The cooperation between the two institutions enables structured, needs-based control of patients between the two clinic locations, while maintaining free choice of doctor. This collaboration allows for simple and quick referrals to the other house, depending on the patient's preference and current capacity.

The surgical cooperation focuses on patients with diseases in the fields of general, visceral, thoracic, and oncological surgery. It includes operations for hernias, the gallbladder, proctological or thyroid operations, as well as diseases in the field of liver and pancreatic surgery.

Both Schön Klinik Neustadt and UKSH offer individual interview and photo requests at any time. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Tobias Keck is the contact person for the Clinic for Surgery at the Lübeck campus of UKSH, and can be reached at T +49 451 500-40100 or [email protected]. The cooperation agreements define the process flows and the provision of necessary capacities - from diagnostics to therapy to aftercare - to ensure optimal control and maximum medical safety for patients. This partnership facilitates shared knowledge, infrastructure, and training opportunities to create a leading center for visceral surgery while improving patient access to specialized services.

The cooperation aims to sustainably improve medical care in the region and ensure comprehensive access to modern treatment quality. By combining the specialized surgical expertise and resources of both institutions, UVZ East is poised to optimize patient treatment outcomes through joint clinical care, advanced surgical techniques, and coordinated research efforts. This partnership is designed to advance surgical care standards and innovation within Schleswig-Holstein East.
