Streamlining Airport Security: Introducing TSA PreCheck Touchless ID
Travelers can now enjoy a faster and more efficient airport security experience with the introduction of TSA PreCheck Touchless ID. The new system, available at selected airports and airline companies, offers a hands-free identity verification process for TSA PreCheck members.
To make use of the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, travelers must first opt-in and register their details with a participating airline, such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, or Alaska Airlines. This involves adding your Known Traveler Number (KTN), valid passport number, country, and selecting "OPT IN" in your airline's profile or at the check-in counter.
Once registered, when you check-in at a Touchless ID-enabled airport, you will receive a mobile boarding pass with a green Touchless ID icon next to the TSA PreCheck logo. At the airport, proceed to the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lane marked with TSA PreCheck and Touchless icons at bag drop or the security checkpoint.
Show your mobile boarding pass with the Touchless ID indicator to the agent at the lane entrance. Stand in a designated spot where a camera captures your live facial image. This image is encrypted and sent securely to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to match with your pre-stored government photos (passport/visa). After your identity is confirmed, you can proceed through security without needing to present your physical ID or boarding pass again.
It is important to note that physical ID is still required elsewhere in your travel process and is recommended to carry as a backup. The TSA assures that images used in TSA PreCheck Touchless ID are not used for law enforcement, surveillance, or other purposes.
TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is currently available at roughly 14 major U.S. airports, including Denver, Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, LAX, LaGuardia, Portland, Seattle, and Salt Lake City, with ongoing expansions. Specific airports such as LGA, JFK, and EWR offer this service for passengers of the participating airlines.
In the future, TSA PreCheck may become free of charge, as stated by the TSA, providing fast security for all travelers without any fees. TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is not only more convenient but also more secure, efficient, and private compared to traditional TSA PreCheck. All personal data and images are deleted 24 hours after the scheduled departure of the traveler's flight.
For a seamless travel experience, follow these simple steps: opt in via the airline app/check-in, get a mobile boarding pass with the Touchless ID indicator, use designated TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lanes, verify your identity by looking into the camera, and proceed without showing physical ID at that checkpoint.
