Durham University Shines Spotlight on Spanish and Latin American Art

Durham University, a renowned institution known for its global reach, is making waves in the world of Spanish and Latin American art. The university's Department of Hispanic Studies has been actively working to bring the vast wealth of Spanish art and culture to the forefront, both locally and internationally.

One of the university's recent initiatives is the Zurbarán Centre, a centre dedicated to showcasing Spanish and Latin American art to international audiences. This centre, a hub for experts from around the world, has played a significant role in the tour of Francisco de Zurbarán paintings from Auckland Castle to the United States.

The Zurbarán paintings, accompanied by Durham University, were the centrepiece of exhibitions in both London and Mexico City. Over 45,000 visitors attended these exhibitions, which were informed by the university's research and global connections.

The university's commitment to Spanish and Latin American art extends beyond the Zurbarán Centre. In 2019, it curated the first exhibition in the UK on Jusepe de Ribera at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London. This exhibition was a testament to Durham University's deep-rooted history of research and teaching in this field.

The university's dedication to Spanish and Latin American art and culture was further highlighted when Ignacio Cartagena Nuñez, Spain's Consul General, visited Durham to learn about their work. Dr. Cartagena Nuñez visited Durham Castle to meet experts in Spanish and Latin American art and Hispanic Studies.

For students at Durham, this focus on Spanish and Latin American art offers unique opportunities. They benefit from world-leading research in Hispanic Studies and a year abroad for skill development and cultural absorption.

In the realm of academic rankings, Durham's Department of Hispanic Studies has consistently shone. For the past five years, it has been ranked as the second Iberian Languages department in the UK, according to the Complete University Guide.

As we look forward, Durham University continues to foster a vibrant community of scholars and artists dedicated to promoting Spanish and Latin American art, language, and culture. For up-to-date announcements and detailed information, we encourage you to visit Durham University's official Spanish and Latin American Studies department webpage or their cultural events calendar.
