Spacecoin Makes History With First Blockchain Transaction Through Space
Spacecoin has made history by relaying a blockchain transaction entirely through space. The test, conducted at TOKEN2049, sent data from Chile to Portugal, covering 7,000 kilometers. This marks a significant step towards satellite-based routing for remote communities and disaster zones.
The successful transaction was processed on the Creditcoin test network, not a major public mainnet. It was a single proof-of-concept to check transaction integrity through spaceborne links. The nanosatellite used was supplied in partnership with EnduroSat, with plans to add three more satellites as part of a CTC-1 cluster scheduled for launch in Q4 2025.
Launching and operating starlink satellites has high costs. Spacecoin aims to compete with major players like Starlink, requiring a clear niche and strong economics. Satellite-based routing could provide a backup route for places with unreliable or censored internet. However, adoption will depend on price, ease of setup, and reliable service.
Spacecoin's successful space transaction is a promising step towards using satellites for secure data transmission. With plans to expand its satellite network, Spacecoin could potentially revolutionize communication in remote and disaster-stricken areas. However, the high costs of satellite operation and competition from established players pose challenges to its future.
