South Africa's New ETA System Streamlines Tourism Entry from September 2025

South Africa is set to introduce an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for tourists starting September 2025. This move is part of the Government of National Unity's plan to modernize the Department of Home Affairs services over the next five years, aiming to make all services fully automated and digitized.

Upon arrival, travelers will use a self-service kiosk to scan their ETA code and provide biometric information for verification. This process is designed to streamline entry for tourists planning a short stay of less than 90 days in the country.

The ETA application process will be conducted through a secure online platform, with instant adjudication unless an anomaly is detected. Biometric data will be required as part of this application process. Travelers will also have the option to submit applications for stay extensions or status modifications through the same platform.

The Home Affairs @ Home project, set to be completed by 2029, aims to digitize certain civic, security, and immigration services using advanced biometric tools and automated systems. This project is part of the broader effort to modernize South Africa's immigration services.

The introduction of the ETA system and the ongoing modernization of the Department of Home Affairs services are expected to enhance efficiency, reduce processing times, and improve the overall travel experience for visitors to South Africa.
