Soothing Onsen Hotel: Visit Hoshino Resorts KAI Akiu on Our Site

Nestled in the picturesque town of Akiu, this new addition to Hoshino Resorts' KAI brand offers a unique blend of traditional Japanese hospitality and modern design.

The property boasts 49 Japanese-style rooms, each adorned with tatami mats, shoji doors, and shared views of the river. The design, a collaboration between Shinya Kojima and Ayaka of Kooo Architects, incorporates colours that echo Akiu's surroundings and features local art and crafts. Each room includes an electric kettle and a selection of teas.

At the heart of the resort lies KAI Akiu's lone restaurant, where the kaiseki-ryōri tasting menu is included in the stay. Highlights of the menu include Sendai beef tongue stewed in shoyu demi-glace and thin-sliced scallop sandwiched with whitebait 'paper.' The menu varies nightly, based on the whims of Hoshino's executive chef and utilizes local ingredients. An optional wine list headlined by local sake and shōchū is available for those seeking a complementary beverage.

Staff at KAI Akiu are accommodating, informed, and versatile, serving meals, leading morning stretches, and guiding sake-tasting ceremonies. The lounge offers 24-hour coffee and select times with an open bar and local snacks.

For those seeking relaxation, the onsen baths, open until 1 am each night, provide a tranquil escape. The property offers three springs in total: one outdoors and two indoors varying in temperature. The pre-existing onsen's appearance has been largely preserved by Hoshino, creating a stylish yet old-school aesthetic.

Akiu is within easy reach of Rairaikyo Gorge and Otaki Falls, making it an ideal base for nature enthusiasts. For those seeking a taste of Wisconsin, Great Dane Brewing offers beer and cuisine in Akiu.

English-speaking guests may be a relative rarity, especially in the hotel's inaugural year. However, the resort offers a resort-standard menu of in-room oil treatments and massages by reservation.

The property is located near thermal waters discovered 1,500 years ago, adding a touch of history to this charming resort. Whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure, or a taste of local culture, Hoshino Resorts KAI Akiu promises an unforgettable experience.
