Rethinking Coastal Spaces: Forum Aims to Balance Demands and Protection
The Coastal Research Center, a collaborative venture of TU Braunschweig and Leibniz University Hannover, is hosting the inaugural Coastal Research Forum in Hannover on September 11 and 12, 2025. Titled 'Rethinking Coastal Spaces: Risks, Challenges, Opportunities', the conference aims to address the growing conflicts between competing demands and protection interests in coastal regions.
Coastal spaces, home to diverse ecosystems and key players in the energy transition, face mounting pressure from climate change impacts such as rising sea levels and increased extreme events. The forum will delve into sustainable strategies for shaping, using, and protecting coasts, exploring topics like the role of mussel reefs, nature-based coastal protection measures, and synergies between climate protection and coastal protection. Representatives from science, business, society, and politics will gather to discuss current developments and interdisciplinary projects on the Wadden Sea coast.
Keynote speeches, presentations, and panel discussions will provide insights into the latest findings in German coastal research, highlighting the need to rethink coastal spaces in the face of growing risks and challenges.
The Coastal Research Forum, hosted by the Coastal Research Center, brings together key stakeholders to rethink coastal spaces. With climate change impacts increasing pressure on these vital areas, the forum seeks to identify opportunities for sustainable management and protection. The event is set to spark meaningful dialogue and collaboration towards a more resilient future for Germany's coastal regions.
