Quebec Parliament Building: A Historic Gem Open to All
The Quebec Parliament Building, a grand eight-storey structure completed in 1886, stands as a historic landmark in Quebec City. Inspired by the Louvre's expansion in Paris, it was designated a Quebec national historic monument in 1985. The building's facade boasts 26 bronze statues honouring key figures in Quebec's history, though the artist remains unidentified.
Designed in the Second Empire architectural style, the Parliament Building spans approximately 100 metres on each side, with four wings forming a square. Its gardens, a delightful feature, are filled with native Quebec plants and an edible garden that yields over 130 varieties of vegetables, fruits, and herbs. These are generously donated to a local charity.
Across from the building, the Tourny Fountain, a gift from La Maison Simons, adds a touch of elegance, surrounded by vibrant flowers. The building houses the Parliament of Quebec, including the National Assembly and the Lieutenant-Governor. Visitors can explore its grandeur through free, 60-minute guided tours in both French and English.
