Ghosts of the Past, Whispers of the Present in Westklue, Usedom

Westklue, the ancient fishing village nestled on the Haff of Usedom, still echoes with the haunting memories of the devastating fire on December 11, 2013, that claimed two seniors' lives. Today, this historic hamlet with less than 15 residents has a new chapter, thanks to Karin Wohltat-Meyendorf and Norbert Meyendorf, the adventurous couple who turned the ex-fisherman's house into their dream coastal abode.

A Breathtaking Refurbishment

Originated from Potsdam, the duo decided to make Westklue their homebase after acquiring the property. "Fate led us to Westklue," says Karin, aged 66. Since 2016, the couple has poured immense money, effort, and meticulousness into the water's edge property, transforming it into a stunning main house with a guest room offering a wellness bathroom and a small vacation home.

The Inquisitive Tourist

Embracing tourism post-pandemic, the couple has noticed changes in travelers' preferences. "The post-COVID crowd comes with higher expectations," shares Karin. "Price hikes are common, even in small towns like Westklue. The inflated prices for dining and beach chair rentals can sometimes feel shameless," she asserts.

The Unspoken Code of Living Together

The free-spirited landlord encounters predictable issues associated with tourists' habits. "Tourists, when left to their own devices, tend to leave behind a mess in the shared spaces," Karin admits. To ensure a cleaner environment, she's made certain adjustments to her rental agreement, requiring guests to book breakfast when renting the guest room.

Flexibility and Compassion

Karin understands that flexibility is key when dealing with vacationers' idiosyncrasies. She accommodates one-night bookings for the guest room and two-night minimum stays for the vacation home, allowing travelers the freedom to choose their length of stay. Additionally, she's refreshingly compassionate when it comes to pets, charging a reasonable 20 Euros per pet per stay, lower than some areas' exorbitant daily rates.

Mysteries and Mischief

The landlord of Westklue has lived through her fair share of intriguing episodes involving guests. "Small items go missing sometimes, and occasional breakages aren't unusual. I find it peculiar when a guest stole the shower head seal," she muses. More puzzling was a guest who ripped out a page from her cherished art print calendar, featuring historical views of Potsdam.

An Open Letter to the Tourist Community

Concerned with the dangerously reckless driving habits shown by tourists on the island, Karin shares her observations. "Tourists' risky overtaking maneuvers frequently lead to accidents, some with fatal consequences." She encourages fellow landlords to reconsider their rental practices, advocating for shorter rental periods and more pet-friendly policies.
