Exploring the Underwater Wonders of Neo-al, Jeju Island
Neo-al, located off the southern coast of Jeju Island in South Korea, is a hidden gem for divers seeking an unforgettable underwater adventure. Although direct information about the specific underwater landscape and diving conditions at Neo-al may be limited, the area shares many characteristics with Jeju's renowned diving environment.
Jeju Island's Underwater Landscape and Ecosystem
Jeju Island, a volcanic island, boasts steep cliffs and rocky underwater formations created by lava flows. At sites like Neo-al, divers can expect to encounter volcanic rock formations, lava tubes, and a varied terrain featuring crevices, caves, and arches that provide shelter for an abundance of marine life.
The unique underwater topography at Neo-al, characterized by smooth, curved volcanic stones, creates ideal environments for a rich biodiversity. Divers can encounter colorful reef fish, sea anemones, sea urchins, and various invertebrates, as well as explore kelp forests and volcanic rock. The combination of volcanic rock and nutrient-rich currents supports a thriving benthic community.
Diving at Neo-al and Popular Diving Sites in Seogwipo
Jeju Island is a popular diving destination in South Korea, with Seogwipo being a particularly attractive location for divers. Sites like Seogwi-do, Munseom, and areas adjacent to Neo-al are known for their biodiversity and underwater scenery.
Unique exploration opportunities at these sites include flooded lava tubes and natural underwater caves. Divers can enjoy relatively safe conditions due to clear water visibility and moderate currents, making it easier to observe marine life and navigate the underwater terrain.
Diver-friendly facilities and local dive shops in Seogwipo provide equipment rental, guided tours, and safety briefings. For those interested in a more structured diving experience, AquaMarine and The Watergarden are sponsoring a 4-night, 5-day special package for a dive trip to Jeju Island.
A Photographic Journey at Neo-al
On October 26, 2019, a dive at Neo-al revealed an underwater landscape filled with orange-colored soft corals. The photo, taken using a Sony RX100 III camera housed in an Ikelite housing and equipped with a Weefine WFL-01 Wide Angle Lens and Dual Sea & Sea YS-D2J strobes, captured two big sea fans between two sea mountain-tops. Divers also observed damsel fishes dancing during the dive.
Jeju Island is a paradise for soft corals, and Neo-al is no exception. The clear waters and interesting underwater topography make it an ideal destination for those seeking a unique diving experience. While specific detailed dive site maps or descriptions for Neo-al may not be extensively documented, local dive centers and Jeju tourism boards typically provide updated guides and ecological data for those interested.
