OpenAI, Samsung, SK hynix Team Up to Boost South Korea's AI Ambitions
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT through the global Stargate initiative. The aim is to bolster the country's AI ambitions.
As part of this partnership, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix will provide OpenAI with up to 900,000 wafers of DRAM per month by 2029. This substantial volume represents a significant portion of the global monthly production, which stands at approximately 1.5 million.
OpenAI will also establish data centers in Pohang and South Jeolla Province. Samsung SDS and SK Telecom will support these projects respectively. This expansion aligns with OpenAI's global AI infrastructure initiative Stargate, which was launched in June 2021 with partners including Oracle and SoftBank, along with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has indicated that the government may relax certain regulations, such as financial-industrial separation, to encourage more investment in the AI sector. This move follows OpenAI's memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Science and ICT to set up AI data centers outside the Seoul metropolitan area.
The collaboration between OpenAI, Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and the South Korean government signals a significant boost for the country's AI sector. With substantial DRAM supply and data center investments, South Korea further cements its status as a key AI hub in the Asia-Pacific region, following Amazon Web Services' dedicated AI data center project in Ulsan with SK Group.
