October Birthstone: Opal

In the world of gemstones, opals stand out for their unique and captivating properties. These hydrated forms of silicon dioxide, with an inherently amorphous structure, are found worldwide, particularly in volcanic rocks and hot spring areas.

Opals come in various types, each with its distinct characteristics and value. The rarest and most valuable is the Black Opal, known for its dark body tone and striking contrast with vivid play-of-color. Mainly mined at Lightning Ridge, Australia, these opals are prized for their exceptional brilliance and are highly sought after by collectors.

White Opals, the most common variant, have a light or milky background and play-of-color visible over a mostly white or pale body tone. Crystal Opals, distinguished by high translucency, allow light to pass through and create a 3D depth effect with vibrant colors. Fire Opals, known for their bright, solid colors of yellow, orange, or red, are common in volcanic regions, especially Mexico.

The value of an opal is determined by factors such as body tone, the intensity, pattern, and coverage of play-of-color, transparency and clarity, rarity, and origin. Natural opals are prized for their unique, complex play-of-color and origins, while synthetic opals meet demand for affordable alternatives but require careful identification to avoid confusion.

Synthetic opals, often called fake opals, are lab-created to simulate natural opals' appearance. They were first developed in the 1970s, notably the Gilson opal in Switzerland and later in Japan. When comparing natural and synthetic opals, one can observe differences in minerals and compounds, patterns, internal structures, fluorescence, and natural inclusions.

To ensure the authenticity of an opal, it is essential to observe the stone using a 10x loupe, view it under magnification, and perform UV fluorescence and spectral analysis. Trusted sources and certifications are also crucial due to market confusion caused by high-quality imitations marketed with misleading terms like "Gilson" opals.

Opals are soft with a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale, making them vulnerable to knocks, scuffs, and abrasions. They are porous and can be easily damaged by acids and chemicals such as detergents, perfumes, and jewellery cleaner. It is recommended to keep opals in cooler temperatures, preferably with a bit of moisture in the air, when storing them.

Opals have been valued for millennia, dating back to Ancient Greek and Roman times. Despite some historical misgivings about their luck, opals continue to captivate people today, making them a popular choice for jewellery and a symbol of gemstone magic for those born in October.
