New $480M Airport in Kazakhstan Boosts Asia-Europe Link
A new international airport is under construction in the Kazakh region of Shalqar, with German involvement. The project, valued at around 250 billion Tenge (approximately $480 million), is part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen Kazakhstan's role as a transport hub between Asia and Europe, aligning with the Belt and Road Initiative.
The airport, being developed by the German-Kazakh joint venture 'Skyhansa', is planned in three phases until 2032, with the first phase set to be completed by 2027. It will be an integrated regional hub, featuring modern cargo and passenger terminals, an aircraft maintenance center, a fuel depot, hotels, and a business center. During the construction phase, around 700 new jobs will be created, with at least 90% of the workforce being from Kazakhstan. The airport will be directly connected to the railway network, making it a significant hub in international freight and passenger news. This project aims to strengthen regional air traffic and position Kazakhstan as a long-term strategic logistics hub between Europe and Asia.
The new international airport in Shalqar, with its strategic location in the special economic zone 'Khorgos - Eastern Gate', near the Chinese border, is expected to boost Kazakhstan's role as a transport hub. The project, with an investment of around $480 million, is set to create jobs and stimulate regional economic growth.
