Nestled amidst the serene mountains of Chongqing, China, DoDesign's Drifting Stones Pavilion is a revelation for the senses. Instead of shouting its presence, it whispers mysteries, like an ancient relic or an otherworldly monument dropped from the stars. This extraordinary architectural creation derives largely from the designer's poetry-inspired imagination sparked by a single, flat-topped boulder-turned-muse.
The pavilion is a symphony of two camaraderies: The Stacks, a rhythmic symphony of stone paths, and The Hut, a transparent retreat fashioned from glass walls. The duo dances its visitors through the valley, captivating them with a series of visual and tactile experiences that unveil the mountainscape's raw beauty. The stone path, sculpted to mirror nature's undulations, leads to a platform that delivers a surreal balance of groundedness and otherworldliness.
At its core, the designer's philosophy lies in a delicate equilibrium. The pavilion is neither an exact copy of nature nor a brash architectural statement. Instead, it straddles the line between the two, creating a space that embodies a sense of exploration and introspection. In the mirrored elements, the natural world sometimes disappears, while the geometric, stone structures dictate their own distinctive charms. A steel skeleton provided the pavilion's structure before a cement skin was poured into it, around which local artists carved exquisite, stone-like textures.
