Lights, trees, and a 2.8-kilometer graffiti mark the revival of Aurora and Barriera, two significantly transformed urban landscapes.

In the vibrant city of Turin, Italy, a significant urban regeneration project is underway in the Aurora and Barriera di Milano neighborhoods, with a focus on Corso Palermo. Led by Carlo Ratti Associati studio, the project aims to breathe new life into these areas, enhancing their beauty, promoting inclusion, and fostering sustainability.

With a population of approximately 88,000, these neighborhoods boast a high presence of foreign residents (36%) and a high concentration in the 25-34 age group. The project is expected to revitalize these communities, providing spaces that cater to their needs and fostering a sense of belonging.

The tender for the construction sites will soon be drafted, and 1 million euros in grants will be provided for commercial operators' investments. The project is part of the Metro Plus 2021-2027 National Program, with a total budget of 25.8 million euros.

The project's key interventions will focus on pedestrianization and public spaces, mixed-use developments, green infrastructure, and innovative transportation solutions. Corso Palermo will be transformed into a 2.8-kilometer urban art canvas, with scenic lighting and a bike path. Over 400 new trees will be planted, and 35% of the surface area along Corso Palermo will be dedicated to greenery.

The redevelopment will also focus on the vocations of culture and nightlife, education and childhood, commerce, and sports. Piazza Foroni market is an emblematic example of the redevelopment interventions. The city has also allocated 3 million euros over three years for youth projects on addiction prevention and the enhancement of Under 35 associations.

The urban regeneration project aims to make the neighborhoods more attractive and safe. The first part of the works is expected to start within the next year, following a long phase of listening to residents, which will continue in the fall and close by the end of 2025.
