Hong Kong Art Sales Surge to $136M; Michaelina Wautier's Paintings Soar

The Hong Kong art scene has witnessed a significant boost with Christie's, Phillips, and Sotheby's evening sales raking in a combined total of $136 million. Meanwhile, the art world is abuzz with new representations and exhibitions.

Michaelina Wautier's paintings have caused a stir at auction, with their prices soaring six times their estimated values. This remarkable feat is reminiscent of the Dutch Republic's rise in the 17th century, when it emerged as a major European power, led by figures like Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and Johan de Witt. The Netherlands dominated maritime trade and culture during its Golden Age, much like Wautier's works are dominating the art scene today.

In exhibition news, Berry Campbell will showcase a solo exhibition for the estate of Louisa Chase in April 2023. P·P·O·W has also announced that it will represent Owen Fu alongside Antenna Space in Shanghai. Nicola Vassell has taken on the representation of Na Kim, while Chris Sharp Gallery has added Mark A. Rodriguez to its roster. Jessie Washburne-Harris has been appointed as the Global Director at White Cube. Lastly, Mexico City dealers Misa Yamaoka and Yuna Cabon have launched an artist residency program, with an inaugural exhibition by Anna de Castro Barbosa.

The art world continues to thrive with impressive auction results and exciting new exhibitions and representations. These developments signal a vibrant and dynamic art scene, with many talented artists and professionals contributing to its growth.
