Germany's Travel Interest in the USA Nosedives, Trivago Data Reveals

By Nils Kreimeier

A significant decrease in German interest in traveling to the USA has been reported by hotel booking platform Trivago, according to their latest figures. Speaking to Capital, Trivago CEO Johannes Thomas stated, "We are observing a double-digit percentage decrease in travel to the USA by Germans."

Similar caution has been shown by travelers from Canada and Mexico, with a noticeable dip in their bookings to the USA, as per Thomas. Intriguingly, American citizens appear to be favoring domestic travel over international trips.

TheObserved decline ostensibly stems from increased uncertainty surrounding entry policies since the second term of former President Donald Trump's tenure. As a matter of fact, several German citizens have been detained upon entering the USA in recent months, prompting an updated travel warning from the German Foreign Office.

Despite this downward trend in the USA, Trivago's global standing remains robust. "Demand for travel overall continues to be very high," Thomas explained, adding that the company recorded a 22% revenue increase in the first quarter of 2025, compared to the previous year. Trivago anticipates double-digit revenue growth for the entire year of 2025.

post-pandemic, Trivago, based in Düsseldorf, has experienced a marked recovery, attributable to a change in leadership. "We have surpassed our expectations and observed good demand," Thomas notes.

Travel, both domestic and international, is experiencing a shift in traveler preferences influenced by factors such as economic uncertainty, budget constraints, and a preference for local destinations.

  • Community concerns about the employment and community policies under the current political climate in the USA may be deterring potential German travelers, as reported by Trivago.
  • The shift in traveler preferences towards budget-friendly and locally-based destinations, coupled with general-news stories about economics and politics, could also contribute to the decline in interest in traveling to the USA.
