Ah, the Mosel! A region that transports me back to my roots every single time, and the Schloss Lieser hotel never fails to impress. Nestled in the vineyards with the Mosel flowing gracefully nearby, this castle-turned-hotel is a dreamer's paradise.
Upon arrival, I'm greeted by the unique minerality of the Mosel wine region - steep slopes, slate soil, and fabulous Rieslings. Markus Molitor, the Riesling pope of the Middle Mosel, cultivates these exquisite wines not far from here. His wines are the stars of the show at Schloss Lieser, making it a must-visit destination for wine lovers.
A Castle with a Rich History
Pascal Renk, the warm and welcoming director of the hotel, fills me in on the history of this Neo-Renaissance masterpiece. Built in the late 19th century by entrepreneur Eduard Puricelli, the castle was designed to mimic the classic Italian Palladian villas of the 16th and 17th centuries. It boasts an exclusive winery, a private chapel, and even hosted the Bishop of Trier for mass at one time.
With a hint of whimsy in my voice, I inquire about the hotel's wedding ceremonies. Apparently, couples can still tie the knot in the stunning Chapel Royale – pure fairytale magic if you ask me!
Indulgent Spa and Dining Experiences
The Puricelli family spared no expense when constructing the castle's 800-square-meter spa, which features a stunning indoor pool adorned with marble, a fitness studio, saunas, a waterfall, an infrared cabin, and more. It's a luxury destination in its own right!
The Art Nouveau addition, built a century later by the Prussian official Dr. Clemens Freiherr von Schorlemer-Lieser, adds a harmonious touch to the historic castle. My room is a testament to this blend, with its paneling, silk-clad walls, and luxurious furniture – fit for royalty!
Schloss Lieser Redefines Luxury Hotel Hospitality
The renovation and transformation of Schloss Lieser were masterfully handled by Dutch businessman Piet Killaars and his wife Anja Killaars-Morbach in 2007. Careful preservation of the original interior elements, such as doors, ovens, open fireplaces, and staircases, lends an authentic charm to the hotel.
As I walk through the stunning halls, I'm greeted by an international team of employees from various countries, from Indonesia and South Africa to the Maldives. Their talent, warmth, and focus on hospitality make each stay at the hotel truly special. The diversity among the staff is a refreshing reminder of the world's beauty – a unique touch for this picturesque resort.
Throughout my visit, the owners go above and beyond to ensure that every guest's experience is nothing short of extraordinary. The food, prepared by masterful chef Miljo Weimar, is nothing short of delicious. Whether it's lobster, asparagus, garlic cream soup, or Tournedos Rossini, each dish is a celebration of regional flavor.
During your stay, don't miss the opportunity to participate in the annual wine tasting with the 101 hoteliers, where you'll be able to sample Markus Molitor's exquisite wines straight from the barrel. It's an unforgettable culinary journey that showcases the very best of the Mosel wine region.
My only regret is that Schloss Lieser doesn't have a more prestigious affiliation – its Relais & Châteaux or Preferred Hotels status definitely would have been a better fit! Regardless, Schloss Lieser remains a treasure in Germany's heart just waiting to be discovered.
