Excessive...is it?
On a sunny summer day, the foot of Germany's highest mountain, Zugspitze, is bustling with activity. The large parking lot, a common sight for visitors, is filling up rapidly, indicating a busy day ahead.
Tour buses are experiencing traffic congestion as they navigate their way through the crowd, while cars, including those with Munich license plates, are honking at the stewards in high-vis vests, a sign of the mounting excitement.
Florian Hammerl, a local guide, stands in the midst of this lively scene. He mentions that today might be particularly busy on the Zugspitze. Tourists, some of whom are American, are passing him by, eager to embark on their Zugspitze adventure.
The Zugspitze, standing tall at 2,962 meters, offers a variety of activities for its visitors. From the iconic Gipfelkreuz (summit cross) where many take their commemorative photos, to the highest church in Germany, and the Panorama Lounge—Germany's highest restaurant—where one can enjoy a meal or a drink with panoramic views.
Hiking is a popular activity, with well-marked rocky trails and alpine huts like Knorrhütte offering rest and local food. On clear days, visitors can dress in light active wear and hiking shoes, as the temperatures are mild compared to winter.
Typical visitor activities include taking the cable car or cogwheel train to the summit for quick and scenic access, walking a few minutes from the cable car station to the summit cross for photos, and hiking around the summit area or on longer trails like the Reintal route. Dining or having a drink at the Panorama Lounge restaurant, visiting the highest church in Germany, and even hiking up from lower elevations with proper hiking boots and gear are also popular activities.
Despite the popularity of the summit, it can be busy, especially near the iconic photo spots and the restaurant terrace. However, summer weather is generally pleasant, allowing visitors to wear T-shirts and shorts on warm days, though a light rain jacket might be useful just in case.
Interestingly, the past few days have been often cloudy at the Zugspitze, but when the weather clears up, people flock to the mountain, making today's activity a testament to the mountain's allure.
