EU Unveils Dual AI Strategies to Boost Europe's Global Leadership
The European Commission has revealed two significant strategies to fortify Europe's stance in artificial intelligence: 'AI in Science' and 'Apply AI'. These initiatives, supported by substantial funding, aim to propel AI integration and make Europe a global leader in AI-driven research.
The 'AI in Science' strategy, allocated over 3 billion euros, encompasses two key components: RAISE, a virtual institute for bundling AI resources for science, and the Frontier AI Initiative. The Commission also established the 'AI Act Service Desk' to facilitate the implementation of the AI Act.
The 'Apply AI' strategy, with around 1 billion euros in funding, brings together industry stakeholders in the 'Apply AI Alliance', coordinated by the DG CNECT in collaboration with other Directorates-General. This alliance will drive the coordination and implementation of the AI Act. Additionally, the Commission plans to set up the 'AI Observatory' to monitor AI measures and initiatives.
Both strategies include sector-specific initiatives and AI hubs for SMEs and various industries. The Commission also announced plans to present a 'Data Union Strategy' by the end of October.
The European Commission's 'AI in Science' and 'Apply AI' strategies, supported by substantial funding, aim to bolster Europe's position in artificial intelligence.
