"Shell Out" Some Change, Make a Difference: AWO Weser-Ems Supports Heart Kids in Ostfriesland

East Friesland's Hearts: AWO Generously Donates with Emotion

What does a bunch of people giving up loose change amount to? For AWO Weser-Ems, it turns into something incredible - particularly for children born with heart troubles. In the latest Restcent Donation Drive by the AWO group, approximately 3,000 Euros was amassed by employees waiving the decimal places of their net salary.

The enthusiasm to give was remarkable. Countless small donations transformed into a considerable collective sum: A total of 140,000 cents, or 1,400 Euros, went to the Heart Kids Ostfriesland association. Instead of coin piggy banks, Stefanie Ippen (Corporate Work Council) and Thore Wintermann (AWO Board) symbolically handed over a check to the association's chairman, Jörg Rüterjans.

Vacation Villa with a Heartbeat: The "Familieninsel OstFriesland"

The funds will go directly towards a unique project: the "Familieninsel OstFriesland". Here, a vacation home with rehabilitation facilities for families with heart-diseased children will be constructed. The aim is to provide parents peace of mind regarding their child's illness and create a soothing atmosphere for recovery all at once.

"This is a locale where they can find security in coping with the child’s condition, develop optimistic visions for the future, and maintain stability for the family as a whole." - Jörg Rüterjans

Such a facility fills the gap in care between hospital stays and daily life at home - a genuine heart-warming project.

Strength in Numbers: Not Just for Heart Kids

But the support doesn't end there. The association also fights for the so-called "shadow children" - siblings often left in the shadows. The projects are diverse:

  • Tutoring to keep schoolwork on track
  • Hippotherapy and weekend seminars
  • Kids' electric bikes and joint outings
  • Dying Wishes Granted for severely ill children
  • Alternative healing methods

It's clear: Every penny donated makes a difference. Every cent opens new doors.

AWO with Heart: A Symbolic Gesture with a Lived Meaning

For AWO, this donation is more than a mere symbolic gesture. It embodies a living solidarity.

"There's a priceless social value where people engage for others." - Thore Wintermann

AWO itself operates numerous facilities for children, advocates politically for their rights, and considers advocacy for children with heart conditions a clear priority.

Bridge Builder with Pennies: Cent by Cent

Participation in the Restcent Action is optional. Employees choose whether they wish to participate. Those who opt-in donate the cent amounts of their net salary - between 0.12 € and 11.88 € per year.

Doesn't matter if you work full-time or part-time, or if you donate mere pennies or multiple dollars - your sentiment counts. And the outcome demonstrates its impact.

"With our combined efforts and minimal effort, we can build bridges here and alleviate problems." - Thore Wintermann

The Heart Kids of Ostfriesland offer support not only to directly affected families, but also collaborate with medical professionals. Legal advice is part of their service. The association was founded in 2007 and today boasts over 100 families as members.

AWO Weser-Ems: A Mover and Shaker in the Community

The AWO Weser-Ems Regional Association operates in Lower Saxony between the North Sea and the Osnabrück region, with over 4,000 employees. Some 80 facilities offer social services, ranging from care and childcare to psychosocial inclusion and individual guidance.

As a political association, AWO Weser-Ems fights for a democratic, fair, and solidarity-based society.
