The Intercultural Weeks (IKW), an initiative that encourages exchange, coming together, and shared experiences, are returning to the Herford district from September 13 to October 24. This annual event, which has been taking place for over 40 years, is organized by the "widunetz - Network for Integration & Diversity in the Herford District".
The IKW is a collaborative effort between the German Bishops' Conference, the Evangelical Church in Germany, and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis, and it extends nationwide, with around 5,000 events offered in more than 500 cities and communities. However, the Intercultural Weeks in the Herford district are not specifically mentioned as being part of the nationwide Intercultural Week, but they share the same motto "Diversity connects".
The "widunetz" is a cooperation that has existed since 2008 in the Herford district, bringing together the institutions in the district that deal with integration and migration. The goal is to network these institutions and carry out joint projects. This year's Intercultural Weeks actively involve the Kommunales Integrationszentrum (Municipal Integration Center), the city of Detmold, numerous actors, various clubs, associations, and other institutions who together organize a diverse program of theater, workshops, lectures, sports, and other participatory activities for the entire population.
Landrat Jürgen Müller is the patron of the Intercultural Weeks and emphasizes that every person can contribute to a societal togetherness where everyone feels comfortable. The "widunetz" is bringing together the events to promote a strong message against racism and exclusion, and for living diversity and shaping community. Over 20 events will be held throughout the district, organized by various associations, counseling centers, churches, further education institutions, and different religious communities.
