Disruption on A10: Unforeseen Easter Havoc

The Tauern motorway (A10) in Austria experienced significant congestion during the recent Easter holiday period, causing delays and disruptions for travellers. The congestion was a result of a combination of factors, including increased holiday traffic, tourist influx to ski resorts and mountain regions, peak travel periods, and potential bottlenecks at toll plazas and tunnel sections.

The increased volume of vehicles was further compounded by construction work in Eben im Pongau, as well as the tunnel construction site between Golling and Werfen. A nighttime accident on Thursday worsened the congestion, particularly on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

The congestion was so severe that wait times heading south reached up to three hours, and a 12-kilometer backup was reported in Eben on Friday morning. In addition, a 11-kilometer backup was reported before the tunnel area between Golling and Werfen due to block clearance. The combined backups extended for a total of 23 kilometers.

The single-lane construction zone on the Tauern motorway in the direction of Villach until May 19 also contributed to the congestion, particularly on Thursday afternoon. Despite the completion of the construction zone on May 19, the congestion on the Tauern motorway continued to be severe.

The congestion had a significant impact on travel on the Tauern motorway, with increased risk of accidents due to stop-and-go traffic, disruptions to freight and logistics schedules owing to extended travel times, and local economic impact, both positive (tourism) and negative (traffic delays).

For precise, real-time details on Easter traffic for a specific year, it is advisable to consult traffic reports from Austrian road authorities or navigation services closer to the holiday period.
