Disrupted Summer Journeys: Severe Delays Plague One Swiss Airport During Peak Season Travel

In early August 2025, both Geneva and Zurich airports in Switzerland are grappling with the challenges of increased passenger volumes during the busy summer travel season. This surge in traffic has led to flight delays and some cancellations at both airports.

The delays at Geneva Airport are primarily due to chronic understaffing at the air traffic control tower at the EuroAirport, exacerbated by Air Traffic Control strikes in France on July 3rd and 4th. The training period for air traffic controllers, which lasts around two years, makes it difficult to quickly fill new positions. To mitigate morning delays, Geneva has implemented measures such as enabling check-in from 4 am and installing self-service baggage check-in equipment. However, the airport is still handling high traffic volumes that increase delay risks.

Zurich Airport, on the other hand, has faced more pronounced disruptions. Major delays on European and long-haul flights have been reported, with 48 delays and 2 cancellations recently. Carriers affected include Swiss International Air Lines, Lufthansa, Air France, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, among others. Zurich is taking steps to address these issues, implementing measures such as extra staff, a camera system to detect aircraft preparation delays, and planning tools to optimize operations amid this demand.

The EuroAirport, located in Saint-Louis, France, is also experiencing frequent flight delays. More flights, both arrivals and departures, need to be monitored due to a recent reorganization by the French Civil Aviation Authority, requiring more personnel. This reorganization is responsible for the flight delays at the EuroAirport, not the airport itself or Switzerland. The situation at the EuroAirport is likely to remain tense for some time.

It's important to note that Zurich was also impacted by the Air Traffic Control strikes in France. The impact on Zurich was less severe than that on Geneva. In fact, the situation in Zurich has since normalised, with delays at this particular airport not worse than usual during the summer. The situation in Geneva has also calmed down, and the airport is not experiencing excessive delays.

Swiss International Air Lines has taken proactive measures to address these issues, cutting about 1.5% of its scheduled departures until October 2025. This move may affect flight availability and scheduling across these hubs.

In conclusion, both Geneva and Zurich airports are under pressure due to the summer travel demand. Zurich is experiencing more pronounced disruptions and some cancellations, while Geneva has taken steps to mitigate morning delays but still faces crowded conditions. The EuroAirport, located in France, is experiencing frequent flight delays due to the reorganization by the French Civil Aviation Authority. Passengers are advised to check their flight status and arrive early to ensure a smooth travel experience.

Following the unexpected surge in summer travel demand, passengers planning to travel through Geneva Airport may encounter delayed flights, but Geneva has implemented measures to alleviate morning delays. On the other hand, Zurich Airport is experiencing more significant disruptions, with increased delays and cancellations on European and long-haul flights. Additionally, the EuroAirport, situated in France, is facing frequent flight delays due to a recent reorganization by the French Civil Aviation Authority. Considering these conditions, travelers are encouraged to check their flight status and plan accordingly to ensure a smoother journey.
