Why Make a Sensory Bottle?

Sensory bottles, also known as calming bottles or discovery bottles, are fantastic for a range of purposes:

  • Awesome family activity
  • Learning tool:
  • Encourages kids to explore their senses
  • Develops motor skills
  • Calming aid: Some kids find sensory bottles soothing and relaxing

And imagine your child's excitement when they discover their sensory bottle glows in the dark!

It's an absolute blast!

Let's learn how to create this quick and easy Glow in the Dark Snowman Discovery Bottle.

How to Make a Glow in the Dark Sensory Bottle

Project 1: Glowman the Snowman Sensory Bottle

(This was the name my daughter chose for this craft, and I promised I'd share it under that title)

Materials:

  • A recycled plastic container
  • Warm tap water
  • Glow in the dark glitter glue
  • Wobbly eyes
  • Permanent marker - red and black
  • Orange sticker (I used orange washi tape)
  • Red pipe cleaners (chenille sticks)
  • Glue (to glue the lid and the wobbly eyes)
  • Spoon (to mix ingredients)

Instructions:

  1. Fill two-thirds of your plastic bottle with warm tap water.
  2. Add glow in the dark glitter glue. Pour quite a bit; for my sensory bottles with glitter glue, I suggest a small quantity, but for this project, go big for the glow-in-the-dark effect.
  3. Give it a good stir till it blends as much as you can. There may still be a few lumps after a good stir, but that's fine.
  4. Refill the rest of the container with water and mix.
  5. Glue the lid so that water doesn't spill and your child can't open it.
  6. Glue the snowman's wobbly eyes to the bottle. Alternatively, you can draw the eyes with a black permanent marker.
  7. Stick an orange triangle-shaped sticker for the snowman's nose. We had orange washi tape from another project, so I just cut a triangle shape. Any sticker will work. You can also use paper and glue it to the bottle.
  8. Draw the snowman's buttons with a permanent marker. We used a red color marker for the buttons, but you can choose any color you prefer.
  9. Wrap a red pipe cleaner (chenille stick) around the bottle. This is your snowman's scarf. You can draw it, use lace, or any other suitable material.
  10. Shake it! Find a dark room to see your glow in the dark snowman sensory bottle in all its glory!

Project 2: Olaf-Inspired Glow in the Dark Bottle

You've learned the steps for creating a glow-in-the-dark sensory bottle (skip to this section if you're here already).

We added a bit of Frozen magic to our first bottle after we finished it.

Since my daughter adores Frozen, we chose an Olaf-inspired glow bottle.

I am no artist, but the idea was to upload an image for you to recognize Olaf.

So, we watched a great tutorial by Easy Drawing Guides.

I can't draw, but with a bit of practice, my Olaf resembled Frozen's much better!

Feel free to trace an Olaf outline on clear cling wrap (no judgment here) and wrap it around the bottle if drawing isn't your forte.
