Coffee Haven at Am Mühlwerder: Exploring the Historic "Little Treasure" Site
In the heart of Halle-Neustadt, a significant transformation is underway as the historical coffee garden "Am Mühlwerder" is set for a modern revival. The topping out ceremony for this exciting project took place on the southern grounds of Böllberger Weg, marking a significant milestone in the development.
The building ensemble around the former Gasthof Kurzhals, originally built as a farmhouse around 1751, will be tastefully restored and expanded. The restored Altböllberg 4 residence will serve as the heart of the project, with two restored event halls that can accommodate up to 100 guests.
The new coffee garden will offer a delightful fusion of historical identity and modern life, as stated by Jana Kozyk, Managing Director of GWG Halle-Neustadt. It is designed to become an appealing meeting point for both residents and guests, contributing to the cultural revitalization of the neighbourhood.
By summer 2026, the coffee garden will provide gastronomy, halls for family celebrations, holiday apartments, and a chestnut garden. Two charming holiday apartments will be set up on the upper floor of the former residence. Additionally, the new coffee garden will cater to cyclists on the Saale cycle route, offering 15 guest apartments and holiday homes.
Sustainability is at the forefront of this project, with bike racks and charging stations for e-bikes being part of the usage concept. The event was organized by GWG and GP Papenburg Hochbau GmbH, with the entire project amounting to 12 million euros gross. The building project on the approximately 5,000 square meter site includes three new buildings and a commercial unit.
GWG is carefully renovating and expanding the listed buildings in close coordination with the city planning and monument authorities. A new operator for the restaurant in the new side building has already been found, adding to the anticipation for the coffee garden's grand opening.
This revitalization project is set to breathe new life into a piece of Halle-Neustadt's history, offering ideal conditions for celebrations with overnight stays and contributing to the area's cultural and tourist appeal.
