Chinese Tourists Flock to Kazakhstan During May Holidays
Kazakhstan has found itself among the most sought-after tourist destinations for Chinese travelers during the recent May holidays, according to China's Chinanews agency. This surge in interest is attributed to Kazakhstan's unique tourist attractions and simplified visa procedures.
During 2023, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Kazakhstan surged by 78% compared to the previous year. This significant increase reflects not only the escalating curiosity from Chinese tourists but also the success of Kazakhstan's efforts to boost its tourism industry on a global scale. The country continues to focus on maintaining its presence in the increasingly important Chinese market, with plans to expand into cities like Guangzhou and Shanghai.
Kairat Sadvakassov, Chairman of Kazakh Tourism, put the spike in visitor numbers into perspective: "The escalation in Chinese visitors by 78% in 2023 demonstrates a remarkable interest from the Chinese audience and the effectiveness of our international promotional activities."
Tourist hotspots in Kazakhstan include the scenic city of Almaty, known for attractions such as Kok-Tobe Hill, Green Bazaar, and the Central Mosque. The futuristic city of Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana) boasts landmarks like Baiterek Tower and Khan Shatyr, as well as museums, parks, and the Ishim River. Other notable sights include the Charyn Canyon, a Kazakh Grand Canyon offering scenic vistas and hiking opportunities; the picturesque Big Almaty Lake, perfect for boating and wildlife watching; and the mysterious Lake Kaindy, known for its sunken forest.
For Chinese citizens, visa procedures have been simplified, with some travelers able to enter Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 72 hours when transiting through specific airports. However, for longer stays or more comprehensive travel, Chinese tourists must apply for a visa at the Kazakh embassy or consulate in China. Necessary documents for the visa application process include a passport, visa application form, and proof of accommodation. Travelers are advised to consult the Kazakh embassy or consulate in China or a travel agent for the most up-to-date visa requirements.
