Central downtown district referred to as Herrnhut
Discover the charm of Neuwied's Old Town as you embark on a guided tour of the Herrnhuter Quarter, a remarkable area showcasing a unique and uniform architecture. This tour, scheduled for Sunday, August 25, offers a glimpse into the city's rich history and heritage.
The Herrnhuter Church, serving as the meeting point for the tour, is located within the Herrnhuter Quarter. This church, like its counterpart in the small town of Herrnhut in Saxony (recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage site), reflects the architectural style of the Herrnhuters.
The Herrnhuters, an evangelical minority, settled safely in the Upper Lusatia region in the early 18th century and also established a presence in Neuwied from 1750. They founded a 'Gemeine' (community) here, leaving clear traces that can still be seen today.
The tour will take you through the entire Herrnhuter Square, allowing you to explore the distinctive architecture of the quarter, including the church and its catacombs. The Herrnhuter Quarter is one of the areas where the Herrnhuters have left their mark, making it an important cultural and historical site associated with this unique community.
Registration for the tour can be made by phone at 02631/802 5555 or in person at Marktstraße 59 up to two days before the tour. The tour starts at 2 pm in front of the Herrnhuter Church.
Participation in the tour costs six euros for adults, four euros for children under 14, and it's free for children under 6. Don't miss this opportunity to delve into Neuwied's fascinating past and experience the charm of the Herrnhuter Quarter.
