Rocking its Quart century: Pfalzgalerie Amps up with Art that Sparks Debate
Art Exhibition: mpk - Pfalzgalerie Showcases Question-Provoking Artworks over 150 Years - Celebrating 150 years of MPK: The Palatine Gallery exhibits art that provokes thought
Hey there!
The Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern (mpk) is going all out for its 150th birthday, planning an epic shindig and a spanking new exhibition of its collection. The main event kicks off on May 11th, hosted by the honorable Alexander Schweitzer (SPD), as the museum's boss, Steffen Egle, announced. "We've given art a fresh coat of paint and made it more engaging for you," Egle said.
Three captivating tours under the banners "What's Art, Really?", "Humanity and Art", and "Art for All Senses" will offer a fresh lens on roughly 300 pieces from the museum's collection. The mpk has tossed away the old-fashioned, chronological exhibition style by theme periods.
Pre-opening Party and Family Day on the Launch Weekend
The mpk’s birthday celebration will start a day early with a bash and a family day! "Our fresh look includes hidden gems and opportunities for our visitors to get involved,” said Egle.
The special exhibition "Leap Through Time - Bought. Swapped. Stolen?" delves into the museum’s history during the Nazi era and gives provenance research the spotlight. "I wanted us to contribute to understanding our museum’s history during the Nazi period this anniversary year," explained Egle.
The '50s-era museum building will shine again with renovations, and a wall painting by Edvard Frank (1909-1972) will grace our presence once more since the ‘80s. The collection is expanding thanks to donations from the Lenhardt Foundation and the Utermann Gallery. "We invite the community to join our cause, and we're planning a donors' wall," said Egle.
Digital Accessibility and Future Projects
A new digital platform is in the works to make our art accessible online in the near future. Long-term projects like an outdoor storage facility in the old state central bank and the reactivation of the Aula show the museum’s focus on the future. Sculptures by Franz Bernhard (1934-2013) and Maximilian Hutlett (1933-2018) add to the jubilee fun. All events are free, as promised by the museum.
Recall that the Palatine Industrial Museum Association set things in motion in December 1874, giving birth to the mpk. The association laid the groundwork for the museum in 1875.
