Catalonia's LIFE eCOadapt50 Project Revives European Roller, Combats Climate Change
The Climate Action Area is spearheading a significant project, the LIFE eCOadapt50, to combat climate change and promote sustainable practices in Catalonia. This ambitious initiative, set to run until 2028, aims to bolster the resilience of vulnerable economic activities and restore biodiversity, with a focus on the European Roller.
The project, which began in 2023, is a continuation of the Life Clinomics project and has received substantial support, with nearly €19 million in funding and backing from twenty-four Catalan partners and two associated entities. The Barcelona Provincial Council is leading the effort to restore the European Roller in the Alt Camp region of Tarragona.
The European Roller, once on the brink of extinction in the region, is making a comeback. The project has established seven nests and ringed 17 chicks, marking a significant step in its recovery. This is not the first time the region has seen such efforts; nearly a decade ago, nest boxes were installed to promote a stable population. The project also involves monitoring biodiversity in fallow land and using local herds of goats and sheep to maintain vegetation balance and reduce fire risk.
One of the key objectives is to expand the implementation of the Local Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change in nineteen territories across Catalonia.
The LIFE eCOadapt50 project, with its focus on climate change adaptation and biodiversity restoration, is a testament to the region's commitment to sustainability and cultural heritage preservation. The return of the European Roller to the Alt Camp region is a significant milestone in this ongoing effort.
