Passengers will have to remove batteries from their mobility devices and carry them into the cabin before the wheelchair is checked. The airline will not count the batteries as part of a passenger's carry-on bag allowance.
The FAA has warned that lithium batteries can act as ignition sources and start fires on board planes. In light of this, Southwest Airlines is implementing the new policy due to the FAA's warning. The policy sets restrictions on the size of lithium-powered batteries allowed on Southwest flights.
