Airline Company Southwest Sets New Rule for Passengers: Remove Lithium Batteries from Mobility Devices Prior to Travel

Airlines, such as Southwest, will now demand travelers to divest lithium batteries from their mobility gadgets prior to boarding.

Southwest Airlines has introduced a new policy regarding the use of lithium batteries in mobility devices for air travel, effective from September 25, 2023. The policy change is in response to the fire hazards posed during air travel, as highlighted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The new policy applies to air travelers using mobility devices with lithium batteries. Passengers will have to remove batteries from their mobility devices and carry them into the cabin before the wheelchair is checked. The airline will not count the batteries as part of a passenger's carry-on bag allowance.

The FAA has warned that lithium batteries can act as ignition sources and start fires on board planes. In light of this, Southwest Airlines is implementing the new policy due to the FAA's warning. The policy sets restrictions on the size of lithium-powered batteries allowed on Southwest flights.

It is important to note that the policy does not specify any exceptions or alternatives for passengers using mobility devices. Furthermore, the policy does not mention any changes to the airline's general battery policy for non-mobility devices.

The policy change is aimed at addressing fire hazards associated with lithium-powered batteries. Southwest Airlines officially introduced the new rules for lithium batteries in mobility devices on August 15, 2023.

Passengers are advised to comply with the new policy to ensure a safe and smooth travel experience. For more information, travelers can visit the Southwest Airlines website or contact their customer service team.
