Lufthansa, the German airline, is taking a significant step towards making air travel safer and more efficient during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. In collaboration with medical firm Centogene, the airline is integrating Covid-19 PCR test results with ticket data at Frankfurt Airport.

The testing facility, located at Frankfurt Airport, has an hourly capacity of 380 tests. Passengers opting for the quick test service will pay €139, while those choosing the slower test will pay €59. The quick test results are available within 2 to 3 hours, while the alternative test takes 6 to 8 hours.

The main objective of this integration is to eliminate a serious problem that restricts international travel: the differences in practices between countries regarding Covid-19. By having up-to-date test results linked to their ticket data, passengers can avoid quarantine upon arrival in Germany or their country of travel.

Lufthansa Group member airlines operate approximately 750 aircraft, with more than half of them resuming flights after the international flights resumed in May-June. The airline industry has faced challenges due to these varying practices, making it difficult for the sector to adapt and prolonging the recovery process.

Aside from this innovation, Lufthansa is also working on improving ground operations using AI technologies. In collaboration with Fraport (the airport operator) and the subsidiary zeroG, they are enhancing processes like aircraft handling, baggage loading, and refuelling for improved operational efficiency and punctuality.

While the focus remains on finding a vaccine for Covid-19 or an effective treatment method as soon as possible, it is clear that these technological advancements can help transform airline travel into a stronger and safer way against events that may cause outbreaks and similar effects. The Covid-19 pandemic serves as a lesson for the industry to adapt and prepare for future challenges.

It is essential to note that results can be transmitted to a mobile application via a blockchain-based digital platform, ensuring secure and efficient data transfer. However, as of 2025, there is no evidence or public reports indicating that Lufthansa is directly linking Covid-19 test results to passengers’ ticket data or boarding processes at Frankfurt Airport.
